Subtraction is the move — resources, scope, ego. What's given up here returns as leverage elsewhere.

Cut deliberately and sincerely. A small honest offering beats a large performative one.

The six lines

1. initial Finish your own work and go quickly to help. Weigh how much to take off first. 已事遄往，无咎，酌損之
2. second Hold to it; setting out turns. Give without subtracting anything from yourself. 利貞，征凶。弗損益之
3. third Three walk together and one is lost. One walks alone and finds a companion. 三人行，則損一人。一人行，則得其友
4. fourth Reduce the illness. Do it quickly and there is gladness. 損其疾，使遄有喜，无咎
5. fifth Someone adds a tortoise worth ten strings of coin, and it cannot be refused. As good as it gets. 或益之十朋之龜，弗克違，元吉
6. top Increasing without taking from anyone. Somewhere to go, and servants who have left their own households to come. 弗損益之，无咎，貞吉。利有攸往，得臣无家

The line texts are the oldest layer of the book. They are pictures, not instructions, and they are meant to be held against your own situation rather than decoded.

How this one is built

Written out as six lines, bottom to top, this pattern is 100011 — a solid line is 1, a broken line is 0. Every relationship above is arithmetic on those six digits, not interpretation: reverse the order and you get the other side, flip every digit and you get the opposite reading, take the middle four and you get what sits underneath. Anyone can check the result, which is what separates a structure from a fortune.

The sequence is built the same way. The sixty-four are arranged in thirty-two pairs, and turned upside down it becomes Investment. The rule holds for all thirty-two pairs without exception — twenty-eight joined by reversal, four by inversion.

In the received order it sits between Release and Investment. The order is not alphabetical or random: the old commentary reads it as a chain, one situation giving rise to the next.
